Slow down and cheer up

We’re all trying to do too much. I’m someone who likes to stay busy all day and collapse into bed at night—but I know that’s not always the best plan for me or my kids. What does constantly needing to do something teach them about the importance of rest and recharging? This isn’t about being lazy; it’s about making space for something we all need.

Dad, take care of yourself—sleep, eat food your grandmother would recognize, and give yourself some time. A fire with friends or a fishing trip can reset your mind and body and make you better for your whole family.

Try this: Let your kids see you taking care of yourself. Go for a walk and invite them. Make a green smoothie and let them try it. There are plenty of ways to prioritize yourself without ignoring your responsibilities.

Takeaway: Self-care should be modeled too, and healthy habits can be fun to share with your kids.

Try this: Phone Jail

Dad, check out a couple of apps if you have an issue with opening your phone too many times in a day. Some of these are proven to save you 2 hours a day which is a ton. I still approve usage on the toilet.

Make This: Homemade protein bars

It’s hard to find a protein bar that isn’t full of ingredients you can’t recognize. If you eat them often, it might be worth buying a few ingredients at Costco and a silicone mold to make your own. It’s simple—and something you can feel good about sharing with your kids.

Dad Fun - Grow some herbs

This time of year is perfect for growing something with your kids. It teaches responsibility and gives them something they can watch grow—and use. Start with something simple, like basil.

Try this:

  • Find containers for soil. Add a few rocks at the bottom and poke holes for drainage.

  • Fill with soil and plant seeds about ¼ inch deep.

  • Label the pots and place them in a sunny spot.

Extra credit: Add a gnome or fairy to guard the plants—bonus points if you name it something like Gary or Zeus. 🌱

Dad Magic: Ice Skating

If you live somewhere that still has winter (they have rinks in Florida too), find a rink and go skating with your kids. Don’t stand on the side looking at your phone you bonehead—if you want adventurous kids, you have to be adventurous too.

Use a walker if you need to get started. Give it a shot. If you wake up a little sore, you’ll know it was worth it. ⛸️

Check this out: Ask the grumpy guy behind the counter if they have these contraptions to rent. You’ll look like your five but you know what, you’ll be learning to skate. Go make me proud!

This newsletter is not professional in nature but intended to be real things to try. They won’t all work but this is a process and I’d love for you to join me on the way. Thanks for reading and we hope to see you next week.
