Do you want help, a hug, or to be heard?

This is a great question to ask your kids. We don’t always need to fix their problems—in fact, that might be one of their biggest problems: we keep solving things for them. Pause. Try asking instead and see what happens. No more guessing.

Also, check out Charles Duhigg’s Supercommunicators. I’m not naturally one of these people, but I’m working on it. The biggest takeaway: know what kind of conversation you’re having if you want it to go anywhere. Otherwise, everyone walks away frustrated.

Try this: when your kids seem off, ask what kind of support they need (not a snack). Learning to name what you need is a skill that lasts a lifetime.

Cook This: Strawberry Muffins

It is about strawberry time and I haven’t made a muffin that anyone likes besides my dog in a while. I also do realize that muffins are actually cake for breakfast, which is ok if it’s your birthday. But let’s agree it’s not always ok. Here is a good, simple, healthish recipe that you will feel good about putting infront of your kids.

Dad Fun - Yogurt container plants

Since it is spring we all need to try to grow something, anything. Better yet ask your kids what they want to grow. Lettuce, Basil, or maybe a pepper? Save your yogurt containers for a week or so and if you need to up your parfeit in take, so be it.

Try this: Get a few of yogurt containers, some seeds, and dirt. Also grab a few rocks to put in the bottom to help your containter drain. Don’t forget to make a few holes as well. Put it on your porch or your window sill and put your youngest kid in charge of watering. Yeah you are going to clean up some water but growing anything is some true dad magic.

Dad Magic: Play Everything and have fun

Sports are fun, games are fun. This is the age to play them all, with your kids. They may turn out to be phenoms when they are 18 and make it rain with NIL money but for now have fun whenver you can. Teach them the granny shot in basketball put the glove on the wrong hand or maybe get crazy and run to third base first. Can you imagine? None of this will hurt their draft status I promise but what is will do is good for you and for your kids. Real, simple, non alcoholitc fun. Go make it happen Dad, they are counting on you.
